SARRC and Cure Autism Now (CAN) have joined forces to bring the Valley’s first autism awareness walk to Tempe Town Lake. Slated for November 19, the event will include a variety of children’s activity and craft stations, live music and entertainment, as well as an autism resource fair. The 5k walker route will begin in the park and continue alongside Tempe Town Lake. The Arizona Association of Providers for People with Disabilities is hosting an ice cream social and a FREE presentation by Dr. Dan Davidson of NAU on Positive Behavior Support.

Molded from the curriculum taught in SARRC’s Second Gear Program, this workshop teaches strategies to change behavior and teach self management. Topics include visual supports and activity schedules to teach functional skill development, personal hygiene and self-help skills. Parents, habilitators, therapists and teachers are welcome to attend.

Michelle Garcia Winner is an internationally recognized speech-language pathologist and specialist for people with social cognitive deficits. During this workshop, participants will develop an awareness of perspective taking skills and how social interactions and understanding can be impacted. Discussion will focus on developing effective teaching strategies to better support individuals with ASD and how interactions are impacted in the home, school and community. Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for eight hours of professional development following the workshop. Advance registration is required.

I am writing to ask for your support of our “Angels for Autism” Golf Tournament to benefit the Autism Society of America, Greater Phoenix Chapter.
- When: Monday November 6, 2006, 10:00 a.m. registration begins, 11:00 p.m. start
- Where: Arrowhead Country Club at 75^th Ave and 101 in Glendale

We could use your support in the following areas:
- If you or anyone you know (family, friends, co-workers, respite or hab. providers, etc) play golf, please join us.
- If you or anyone you know (family, friends, co-workers, respite or hab. providers, etc) have connections for getting donations for our silent auction and/or raffle, that is greatly needed and much appreciated.
- We need a few more volunteers for the day of the event. Bring your spouse, friends, or other family members. I have been coordinating this event for the past 4 years and we have a lot of fun. You will be helping a great cause and get a nice gift bag and a great dinner for your help.
- We had a full field last year, turning away over 20 players due to the popularity and quality of our event. We expect the same this year as well. We will have 3 hole in one cars, a brand new Range Rover, Audi and a Chrysler.
- We will have live entertainment at dinner.
- All of the money raised at this event goes to benefit families here locally in Arizona.

- 6:30 - 7:15 pm General Support Meeting with light snacks and refreshments. Also new parent session II: “What DDD services are available and how to get them.” Presented by Tracy Stewart, Affinity Family Care.
- 7:30 pm Main Presentation: “How ACCEL Educates Children with Autism” by Mindy Malik, Ph.D.,Director of Training and Program Development. ACCEL has over 200 students, and serves more children with autism than any other school in Arizona.

Description: Walkers can stay at the zoo the entire day and have a fun time strolling around the zoo with your family and friends, seeing lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants, monkeys, bears, tortoises, and more! The Zoowalk will cover 1.1 miles on an easy paved path, with some shade and places to stop and view the animals. The Zoo run will cover 2.5 loops inside the zoo.

Location: The Phoenix Zoo is located at 455 N. Galvin Parkway in Papago Park in Phoenix. Free parking is available at the Zoo. Due to large turnout, carpooling is advised if possible. Click here for more details!
